Archaeoastronomy

This seemingly complicated word is a combination of archaeology and astronomy; archaeoastronomers study the earliest bits of evidence that have been preserved through time and attesting of past peoples’ comprehension of celestial events.

The Nebra Sky Disk is the earliest object that archaeologists have found that represents the sky. This beautiful 30-cm bronze disk was found in Germany and was dated to … the Bronze Period, unsurprisingly. You can probably recognise a lunar crescent and stars, the round feature is alternately seen as a Full Moon or the Sun.
