500 Words Reflection:

The theme of our film “Poem” is finding myself in London. The story begins with a girl in London leaving her mother to start a life on her own. Throughout the film, the consistent theme we explore is the understanding of culture and the process of self-growth. In this film, we employed many motifs to deepen the emotional depth and symbolic meaning of the overall theme. For example, the withering of the flowers does not symbolize decline but rather marks the start of a new journey in life. The use of reflections is also one of my favorite techniques. Whether the protagonist sees her reflection by a calm lake, on a golden clock, or in a museum mirror, the act of looking back at her own image constantly reminds her of her inner journey. At the end of the story, the protagonist finally realizes that her self is composed of every experience she has had in the past, present, and future.

In terms of the video editing, we also gave it much thought. ll. During the video, for the part where the mother returns to Shanghai, we used a cooler color tone in the video color grading. This was to reflect the protagonist’s inner loneliness and the sense of coldness. Cool colors visually provide the audience with a sense of isolation and detachment. However, as the female protagonist gradually discovers herself in the city of London and establishes a deep connection and resonance with the surrounding cultural buildings, the color tone of the scenes gradually shifts to warmer tones. This is because we wanted to highlight the female protagonist’s gradual understanding of the world and her internal self-change in her perception of the world.

We also put a lot of thought into the sound design. Besides the two carefully selected background music tracks, we skillfully incorporated various sounds from London, such as the rain on the streets and the hustle and bustle of the crowds. Additionally, there are the clanging sounds of pots and pans when the protagonist is cooking. These sound elements are intended to enhance the authenticity and immersion of the film. We hope that the audience can relate to their own experiences and resonate with them subconsciously.

The framing composition is also an important aspect. We seldom use close-ups for the characters and do not show their faces, which is a metaphor. This little girl represents the countless people who have left home. In the shooting of the scenes, we used various angles and shots, and incorporated wide shots to capture the Prime Meridian and the scene of the female protagonist cooking. This usage method adds contrast for the audience (such as the inner world of the characters and the external environment, reflected through visuals), but the position of the characters remains in the center of the background, creating a focus and eye-catching effect.

We hope that our audiences can be brave to face their inner world!
