I’ve mentioned within previous reflections that not having a concrete narrative when creating, whether it’s writing or filming or anything else, I struggle to find direction. Therefore, I decided to strip everything back, and look at processes professional filmmakers use. After some thought, I remembered some clips I’ve seen of sound designers individually recording sounds that they then layer together to create a coherent sound scape within a film, and while this wasn’t necessary for the assignment, I decided that was how I would creatively push myself and find direction within the assignment. I decided to use the sounds around me while I studied in my accom as my starting point. I individually recorded the sounds; the construction, the typing, placing a mug down, my nails tapping on a desk, etc., and layered them over each other. I then scoured copyright free sound libraries, and chose a lofi song that I thought would mimic traditional “studying music”. However, individually recording all the sounds ended up being a hinderance because DaVinci Resolve only allows 3 audio tracks at a time, which meant that I was limited with my sound layering. Furthermore, despite recording different speeds and types of sounds, when layered together it doesn’t have the textured effect I was going for. While I’m not entirely satisfied with the final product, as it feels more like something out of a youtube vlog than a film’s soundscape, I’m proud of my attempt and hope to hone my skills in the future.
