We think the reason why many substandard translations were uploaded is that the software was more complicated and some concepts weren’t familiar to to people working with Trados for the first time. In translation tech 1, the software and concepts were easier, people weren’t as busy with assessments/other coursework and so they probably would have liked a harder text to work with there.

Also, we think maybe it needed clarifying that this would be treated like a “real” translation, and not as other, smaller homework tasks where the quality of the translation didn’t matter as much.

As for consequences, we imagine a real client either wouldn’t pay you at all, or would severely lower what you’d be getting. Your reputation would also be damaged considerably and you probably would not be getting many assignments after that.

Q1. What is the file name extension for an AutoSuggest Dictionary? e.g. ..\Sample Files\AutoSuggest\AutoSuggest_EN-US_DE-DE.bpm. Workbook 1, page 30.

Q2. What is a context match? These are segments for which a 100% match has been found in the TM and which are preceded by the same segment as the segment from the TM. Workbook 2, page 17. Also, a context match is better than a 100% match. To be a context match, the translation memory segment must be a 100% match for the document segment and the two segments must have the same document context. For the document segment and the translation memory segment to have the same context, they must both have been preceded by the same segment. Workbook 2, page 18.

Q3. What is a perfect match? PM matches are considered highly reliable (even more reliable than context matches), as PerfectMatch takes the context of a segment into consideration even more than CM matches. Workbook 2, page 43.

Q4. Is it possible to perform a concordance search on words or expressions in the target language? The concordance search can also be carried out in the target language. To do this select a string in the target language and press F3. Workbook 1, page 45.

Q5. What does the 5th column in the Translation Editor show? “The fifth column shows the document structure information. Here, you can see whether a segment is e.g. a heading, a footnote, normal paragraph text.  Workbook 1, page 32.
