Digital Assessment training and workshops – Spring term

computer with spiral on screen

The Digital Assessment Team have a new schedule of training and workshops planned for next term – some more technically focussed on Wiseflow assessment platform and some on wider areas of digital-enabled assessment.  These sessions are designed to complement other UCL professional development assessment events and workshops such as those run by Arena, the Digital Education team and Programme Development team, all of whom we collaborate with to establish a holistic approach to assessment and feedback matters at UCL.

Here is our offer for Spring 2023:

AssessmentUCL (Wiseflow) training sessions

In case you are unfamiliar with AssessmentUCL (also known as Wiseflow),  you can be assigned different roles  which determine the types of tasks you can carry out on the platform.   For this reason, we run role-based training for anyone planning to use the platform for summative assessments.  Booking for these sessions are via My Learning – links provided below.   The schedule for next term is as follows:

Manager Training

The person with the Manager role provides administrative support for assessments on AssessmentUCL so this training is designed for colleagues who are Exam Liaison Officers, Teaching or Course Administrators.   The session consists of a demo and Q&A session and covers key tasks involved in the end to end management of an assessment on the platform from set up, through allocation of markers to finalising and transferring grades to Portico

DATES: 17 January, 14 February, 16 March

Marking and feedback

On AssessmentUCL the two key marking roles are the Assessor and Reviewer (moderating/agreeing final grades). This session is aimed at those in a teaching/assessing role and explains the marking and feedback options available for marking exams and other assessments on AssessmentUCL.  This includes annotations, rubrics, marking by question or section, possible workflows for first and second marking, reconciling grades and providing student feedback.    The majority of the training will focus on the Assessor role, before ending on the Reviewer role.     The session provides an opportunity for hands on practice and Q&A.

DATES: 5 and 20 January,  16 February and 14 March

Authoring

Those with the Author role on AssessmentUCL can create interactive online assignments such as MCQs and SAQs and usually include Academic staff, Module Leads, PGTAs, Exam Liaison Officers or Administrators. This session shows you the range of questions you can create on the platform, how to create an assignment with groups of questions, how to manage and share these with colleagues,  and how to attach an assignment to an assessment shell as well as marking and feedback options.  The session provides an opportunity for hands on practice and Q&A.

Authors can also create rubrics for marking assignments – this is not covered in the AssessmentUCL author training but in the Rubrics session (see below).

DATE:  13 February

(Digitally enabled) Assessment Design

In addition to our AssessmentUCL training we have also designed two other workshops on MCQs and Rubrics (see accompanying Blog Post).  You can book these on the Arena teaching and learning events portal

Rubrics: removing the glitch in the assessment matrix?

Rubrics combine criteria, grades & feedback into a single scoring matrix. They help provide consistency and efficiency in marking and support learners in understanding how their performance will be judged. This workshop will focus on the benefits and potential challenges of using rubrics in assessment within your subject area and provide practical guidance on:

  • How to design a rubric aligned to learning outcomes of bringing together criteria, grades & feedback into a single scoring matrix.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of rubrics
  • Creating online rubrics (AssessmentUCL and Moodle)

There will be opportunities for discussion and questions.

DATE: Tuesday 28th February 2023

Designing effective Multiple Choice Questions

Well designed multiple choice type questions can test a range of learning outcomes, help you avoid some common pitfalls in these types of assessments and enable you to make use of increasingly sophisticated digital tools. This workshop will explore the benefits and challenges of using MCQs in both formative and summative assessment and provide practical guidance on:

  • Constructing good MCQs (SBAs and EMQs)
  • The range of interactive question types available on digital platforms (e.g. Wiseflow, Moodle).

There will be time for discussion and questions.

Also coming soon…

As well as the above our plans include:

Assessment UCL weekly drop ins

As we did last year, we plan to run drop ins during the exam period for those of you using Assessment UCL. We know that there is often a gap between attending a training session and actually carrying out tasks on the platform so , along with the wiki resources, this is another way you can get some help from the team.

Assessment design workshops

In liaison with Arena and the Programme Development team, we are planning workshops around assessment design (digitally enabled of course!) both at programme and module level.  We have had requests to run other sessions from individual Faculties for example on feedback which, once designed, may be useful to roll out more widely.
