Final year students, especially those on IBSc programmes, often have a limited understanding of how research data is analysed and how statistics are used to demonstrate our confidence in the data we have generated. I have tried to tackle this through the embedding of practical classes generating a novel data set that students need to analyse and write up in the style of a journal paper. Using their own data helps the students to engage with the process and deepens their understanding of what is actually being compared with the data sets. Writing in the style of a journal article then gives them further insight into how the papers they read are generated and helps to improve their use of supporting literature. Feedback on these reports then directly feeds into helping them to structure and write their dissertations.
