Using group work to facilitate students’ interaction and to reach important course objectives – Dr Elvira Mambetisaeva:

In my teaching of 1st Year Biological Sciences and the MSc Genetics of Human Disease students, group work is aimed to develop students’ science communication and teamwork skills. 1st Year students attend the Frances Crick Institute where they meet a scientist allocated to their group who introduces them to a research topic and assigns a research paper to present. This activity is chosen because a group presentation is less intimidating than presenting individually for a student who just started university. It encourages students to work together and help each other to achieve a cohesive presentation. In the MSc Human Genetics: core skills module, the formative group work assessment serves as a practice before students undertake their individual summative assessment. Students work in groups to explore published literature on a given topic and choose a research paper to present as a group. Through group work, students discuss a chosen paper with each other and learn how to present it in an effective way. This activity prepares them better for their individual presentations of an assigned research paper as they receive feedback on their group presentations. Group work is also used for these cohorts to facilitate students’ interaction as they are new to each other.
