In year 3 of the UCL Biochemistry BSc / MSci degree, students carry out a 30-credit specialist research project using contemporary techniques in Biochemistry. They can choose between “Specialist Research Project in Protein Structure and Function (BIOC0029)” and “Specialist Research Project in Metagenomics (BIOC0023)”. This year, in BIOC0029, we introduced demonstration and inquiry labs. During the demonstration labs in Term 1, the students are taught lab techniques and learn how these lab techniques can be applied to answer various questions about proteins. They also get acquainted with the protein we study. In Term 2, the students use the laboratory for their inquiry experiments. During these inquiry labs, they reproduce, modify, or build on existing peer-reviewed research. In this presentation, I discuss the design and delivery of the inquiry labs. I will also touch upon problems (and their causes) we have identified and solutions we will introduce next year.
