GPL at the UCL Education Conference

Introduction
We blame a series of fortunate coincidences for the existence of this group:
It all began with a random conversation on Tottenham Court Road a few years ago that connected two fun loving colleagues from Research Computing and Digital Education. Two years later, Ellie’s pharmacy game appeared randomly on our radar, followed shortly after by our annual #LearnHack, which added Kitty and Tom to this creative collaborative crew.

As edtechie individuals we sit comfortably on the intersection of gaming, playing and learning.
Together we are in now In Search of Fun and Games.

Tom Olney – Games for learning: Why? Or rather, why not?

Ellie Bates & Mustafa Habib – Games workshop and the Sustainability Game

David & Janina – Python Escape: an escape room game that challenges students to solve puzzles and apply their python coding skills to solve the mystery of the thing that went ‘click’ one night.

Here is an edited version of the conference session, introduced by Martin Compton:

Discussion points:

  • Games – not just learning, but also useful for assessment in a fun way?
  • Are you using games already for any aspect of your teaching?
  • Do you have any ideas for games you would like to make?
  • What tools/skills do you feel you need for developing your own game?
  • What other barriers are there to making and/or incorporating games in your teaching?
