Free, facilitated course for teachers in conflict and crisis settings, 3-21 Feb

Are you a teacher – or someone who supports teachers – in a setting where students’ lives have been disrupted by conflict, crisis and displacement? If so, you are warmly invited to join us on the free, online short course for teacher professional development: Understanding Education in Conflict and Crisis Settings, which launched on FutureLearn earlier this month.

This course is a special kind of massive open online course (MOOC) called a CoMOOC, to emphasise the fact that it was co-designed for collaborative learning by a range of partners and stakeholders. (See What is a CoMOOC?) The co-design process was led by a team from University College London (UCL) and the Inclusive Education Foundation (InEd) in Mae Sot, Thailand, on the border of Myanmar. The course contains many inspirational examples of practice from teachers on the Thai Myanmar border, who are working in exceptionally difficult circumstances, and who generously shared their experiences and perspectives via videos and interviews.

From Monday 3rd February 2025, the course educators will lead a three-week facilitated run of the course, helping to ensure lively discussions and responding to comments from participants.

This short video introduces the educators who co-designed the course, and the course itself:

If you are new to courses on FutureLearn, here is some essential information to help you get started:

  • You will need to create a free account on FutureLearn.
  • From the date that you sign up for the course, you will have three weeks’ free access to the course. You will receive access to one week at a time during that three-week period.
  • Once registered on the course, you will find it easy to follow the steps that are set out for you. There are videos, articles, quizzes and links to external resources.
  • At the end of each step, you will have an opportunity to read comments from your peers and post a comment to the discussion board. This is a great way to share your knowledge and experience and to learn from others.
  • At the end of the three-week period, you will lose free access to the course on FutureLearn, but we are currently exploring alternative ways to make the course materials permanently available, so please sign up for updates if you’re interested.

To access the course, just go to Understanding Education in Conflict and Crisis Settings. We look forward to seeing you there, and we hope you will share this invitation widely with colleagues and friends!
