One of the big issues with the use of videos to support teaching and learning is that it tends to be a largely passive experience. One way to overcome this is to include staged interactions in the videos in the forms of pop up comments or questions or links out to other materials. Marcus Pedersen, a Learning Technologist from UCL’s GBSH and formerly of Moorfield’s Eye Hospital, is an enthusiast for this approach and in the ‘Arena Bitesize’ video below sets out a rationale for the use of a tool in Moodle (H5P) to enable interaction in videos. He also refers to some local action research he and colleagues conducted, the results of which are compelling.

Marcus has also made a detailed ‘how to’ video on using H5P to make interactive videos:

For those interested in the wider possibilities of H5P please start with this page that gives an overview of the different tools available in H5P.

Finally, if you’d like to see an example of what an interactive video looks like, try this one from H5P. Marcus’ focus in many of his videos is on eye surgery so I thought that may not be to everyone’s tastes!
