Here we will showcase some scientific papers and other resources that we reference in our articles or find during our research that we believe to be interesting and relevant to our website.
This recently published paper shows the worrying truth that climate change is having significant consequences on the planet. It firstly analyses previous extreme weather events which have broken previously long-lasting weather records, and shows that recently these records are being broken much more often, by significant margins. It is shown that these are not possible without global warming. Additionally, they project these record-breaking events to only increase in occurence in the coming years, and they showcase the models they use to predict this. Overall this is an interesting paper highlighting the dangers global warming and climate change pose to both the planet and our lives.
This interesting paper was found during research for the article written on blue carbon, documenting the ongoing effort to restore kelp forests around the coasts of Australia. It is a fairly in-depth piece but it is worth a read as it covers many aspects of reforesting the marine environments. The benefits and roles of kelp forests are discussed to show why we should be doing everything we can to protect these environments. Some previous reforestation attempts are also analysed with their successes and failures measured, and additionally they present a promising operation which has had lots of success recently.
This article provides an in-depth analysis of hydrogen and the surrounding technology. It covers the current state of hydrogen and how it can be used alongside other methods in the future, while considering the costs and logistical factors. The article reviews how hydrogen can be implemented into the global energy system in various sectors (Transportation, Industry, Power and more) and weighs up alternatives too in a conclusive report.
A paper published recently exploring the feasibility of ‘e-fuels’, which are hydrocarbon fuels synthesised from hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The offer the potential to produce clean fuels which could replace fossil fuels. There is much debate about how likely it is that e-fuels can succeed in the future, which this article aims to tackle.
This paper, which was referenced briefly at the end of the hydrogen article, offers a new and clean method to produce hydrogen. In this method, they present methane pyrolysis using molten metal. Methane pyroylsis involves splitting up methane (natural gas) using high temperatures and the molten metal (gallium in this case) into hydrogen gas and solid carbon. This method is beneficial since not only is clean hydrogen produced, but also solid carbon – a very useful material that can be used/sold after the reaction, offsetting further costs.
This landmark paper exposes the climate change is having on us as humans, specifically, focusing on epilepsy. It goes on to further explain what we can be doing better to improve this situation.
- Can YOU Fix Climate Change?:
An interesting, informative and well-researched Youtube video talking about climate change and focusing on our individual carbon footprint, an idea popularised by the company BP in an advert in the 2005. It unveils the tricky process around reversing climate change, and covers a few cases that show how difficult it is. (See below)
