Teaching the sight impaired through narrative.

I was fortunate enough to given the opportunity to talk to members of Low Vision London. Long before the meeting I was told not to use PPT as many members were seriously sight impaired. So I set about writing a story about the project I had been working on. The clocked had just ticked 45 minutes of waiting.

It was received really well by the audience so I thought ‘what next?’. I’ll turn it into an animation so to practice my animation skills. You never know what might pop up on the radar in the future.

Escape Room to teach diagnosing

In a rapid turn of events we made an escape room to teach the process of diagnosing a patient. A usually rather dry activity we decided to ‘jazz’ it up.

Using WIX we made an escape room based upon virtual clinics. The relevant information was sent to me by the principal optometrist which can be found through out the the escape room. I used adobe suite to make some quick animation to make it feel more game like.

It proved to be a success with a plan to develop it over the summer after nothing the key feedback points from the students.

Presenting at the UCL Education conference.

As the pandemic continues to limit students live experiences, ophthalmology students have not been able to attend surgery.

So we decided we would try to bring surgery to them (kind of).

Using an existing surgical video (watch at your own peril) created at Moorfields Eye Hospital and H5P we created an interactive video for students to interact with. This proved to be a huge success . So we decided to create a formative assessment of the students understandings of predetermined concepts set by the module lead. An interactive video was made for students to learn how to create their own H5P video.

Students then made their own interactive videos that can be used for years to come and will over time build a large resource of interactive videos for future students.

This was such as success we given a slot at the UCL education conference to discuss the work we had done.

A learning technologists perspective on digital education at the IoO

A blog logging the digital education events that unfold at IoO from a learning technologists perspective.

Days, weeks, months even years (2020) disappear. Logging the activities that take place will act as useful resource for reflection, award applications, remembering past activities and passing onto future learning technologists.

If only I had started this earlier…
