Open Badges

Digital Impact Leaders are required to participate in a project related to technology to enhance learning.  The focus of their work must be the development of digital literacy capabilities, this is their remit and is usually based around a new tool, idea, or concept that has been introduced into their department.  They should be working with an academic and need to be able to evidence their own contributions.  In order to allow our students to show their personal contribution to their project, we have introduced online awards for discreet sets of skills aligned with digital capabilities.  These online certificates are called Digital Badges and have been designed to be awarded on the basis of evidence.  The evidence will show how those who have earned their badges have participated in the project, as in order to apply for the certificate (aka Badge) they need to provide a link to the evidence that meets the criteria.

What are Badges?

Because each student is an individual, they will approach the projects they are working on in their own way.  Before they start on their project, they meet with the team to decide what they will do and how that meets the requirements of the project and the badge.  The evidence is vital here as it will allow for individualised content.  When the badge has been awarded, this web-based evidence will be visible to allow for scrutiny, via either a blog, an ePortfolio or even LinkedIn.
