ADInstruments LabTutor has been used for a number of years by the UCL Medical school. As Dr Pam Houston, Deputy Academic Lead MBBS Year One, UCL Medical School explains in this post about moving teaching online:
LabTutor an interface between our data capture equipment in the lab and a student friendly virtual learning environment (VLE). It is an online learning platform with ready-to-use content for life sciences, nursing, and medicine. The software allows our students to capture real-time data in the lab, on their blood pressure, heart rate, etc., but also a whole range of activities such as testing their vision, reflexes and even kidney function”
The original system was upgraded to a new cloud-based product called Lt in 2020 and has since been adapted for use by some Pharmacy modules. Data from the lab can be linked to using bespoke hardware and the platform has predeveloped lessons that include formative and summative assessment elements. A general introduction to Lt was given in the UCL July 2022 Jamboree session. In the following two case study videos Dr Arnaud Ruiz (Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology) and Adam Phillips (Digital Education Manager) each take a look at the platform and provide the academic and administrative perspective of using Lt to deliver support learning and teaching and for formative assessments.
The academic perspective – Dr Arnaud Ruiz
The Pharmacy department began using Lt during Covid as a way to move pharmacy teaching from a laboratory setting to an online platform. It’s benefits include:
- The ability use personal data from human subjects within the platform
- The combination of formative and summative assessment
- The ability to allocate markers within the platform
- The use of multimedia (videos and images) within the platform
In the following video Dr Arnaud Ruiz looks at how Lt is used on his modules.

The administrator perspective
The move to Lt has been supported by the wider technical team. In the following video Adam Phillips looks at the impact using Lt has had on the laboratory report write up process and formative assessments.

Adam’s top benefits of Lt:
- Lt provides a choice in how you allocate marking
- The use of model answers gives quick accessible feedback to students
- The mixed media is very student friendly
- The data we get from Lt is useful for planning learning and teaching
