Tools

What are tools?

The tools section covers the import and export process of your Reflect content.

Your graduation need not be the end of your UCL Reflect site! Did you know that you can take your content with you? Equally, if you are a new student and already have an external WordPress site, you may choose to move some or all your content over to UCL Reflect. Navigate to the Tools section in the side menu of your Reflect Dashboard. Here you will find an Import and an Export option.

Export

You can create a backup file of your Reflect site (or any WordPress site) at any point. Click on Export and you will be presented with a list of options. For a complete backup, select ‘All content’ and click on the download button at the bottom of the list. The downloaded file will be in XML format.

Selecting posts or pages from the list will give you the option to export specific pieces of content. Caution: this will only export the raw text of your post(s) or page(s). This kind of export will not contain media files, formatting or anything you created using plugins.

Import

Transferring content from another blogging site into UCL Reflect can be done via the import option. The import page contains a number of ready-made import scripts that allow you to transfer from another WordPress site as well as some other popular blogging platforms, such as Blogger and LiveJournal. Depending on where your original content comes from, your import into Reflect may give you different options.

For a transfer of external WordPress to UCL Reflect you will need to upload the exported XML file (see above). Important: if your external WordPress site uses a theme or plugins that are not available inside UCL Reflect, your imported content will look very different and may need reformatting. It may also be missing plugin functionality. Please always check features and themes before starting the import process.
