Researching university education for tomorrow’s world: ethical challenges

High quality research in HE teaching and learning (RHETL) benefits students and academics, yet robust approaches and ethical issues around power and inclusion, are often unfamiliar to both academics in other disciplines and those on teaching contracts.

UCL IOE has developed research-informed, accessible guidance on the related issues for such academics; in particular we focus on the use of inclusive student collaboration in, and contribution to, such research, as central to enhancing its validity and trustworthiness. In parallel we have revisited our (low risk) ethical consent process, promoting that as an efficient and effective route to high quality preparation for robust research, and support for an ethics-first mindset through the study’s lifetime.

In this presentation I address the rationale, the challenges encountered, recommendations and planned routes to a shared understanding and adoption of that guidance, for the target groups of RHETL researchers.
